If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in
the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead
me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
Psalm 139: 9-10
The Sturgeon (SSN637) Class submarines were built in the 1960's
and 70's for the job of anti-submarine warfare. They carried
plenty of MK-48 torpedoes, Harpoon missiles, and Tomahawk
cruise missiles. These boats were also capable of delivering
the SUBROC nuclear depth charge. She has been phased out of use
by the newer Los Angeles and Seawolf Attack Submarines. We did
our part to end the Cold War (you should read the book "Blind
Man's Bluff").
I began my 6 years as a sailor in 1980. After Boot Camp, went
to Sub School in Groton, Ct. Then on to San Diego, for another
year of sonar operating and technician schools at the
FLEASWTRACENPAC (fleet anti-submarine warfare training center
pacific). Then my orders came to report aboard the submarine
USS Sunfish SSN 649 stationed in Charleston, SC. There, I met
the boat in January of 82 and spent the rest of my Navy
enlistment (another four and a half years). Below is a picture
of the Sonar Gang around 1984. Wish I had a group photo of all
the Sonarmen that I worked with over the years.
Great experience!
Thanks for the ride and
memories ?Sally?
